Introduction

Development & (school, college, department)


1. Teaching

The Department plans complete programs, provides quality teachers and the e-learning environment, and cultivates its students to possess English professional and practical knowledge.

2. Research

Research fields of the Department’s teachers mainly are applied linguistics, language education, literature, literature teaching and ESP research. The Department intends to apply applied language teaching to information technology and business management and conduct relevant professional English research in the future.

3.Service

The Department has planned for many diversified services and counseling activities and measures for students, including life counseling, academic assistance guidance and employment service. In addition, it has also actively assisted remote areas in enhancing English teaching.

4.Administration

The Department convenes various meetings and establishes committees as follows: Meeting on “departmental affairs”, “departmental teacher evaluation committee”, “departmental equipment committee”, “departmental curriculum committee”, “department-based curriculum committee”, and “departmental admissions team”. Relevant affairs concerning the Department are reviewed and discussed at these meetings periodically held every semester.


The Goal

The characteristics and development of the Department are associated with NCUT’s development positioning and vision of becoming “a practical and innovative quality university of industrial technology” to cultivate students to become talents with “professional knowledge, humanistic literacy, social care and international perspectives”. The educational objectives and characteristics of the Department are planned based on the vision planned by College of Humanities and Creativity, to “cultivate excellent creative talents with humanistic care, practicality and international perspectives.” The Department cultivates its students to become professional English talents with international perspectives, humanistic literacy and social care. The educational objectives of the Department are specified as follows:

1.  Strengthen core skills of English.

2.  Cultivate professional abilities for “English Teaching” or “Business Communication and Management”.

3.  Train students to have English communication skills with international perspectives.

4.  Cultivate students to have humanistic literacy.

5.  Emphasize lifelong learning and social care.

 

Feature

The development features of the Department are planned towards the two major teaching modules, “English Teaching” and “Business Management”, and are divided into two characteristic sections to cultivate students to become practical English communication talents with humanistic literacy, international perspectives and social care. The Department’s overall development features are: (1) improving professional and practical abilities, and (2) focusing on career development and work attitude. Each of the development features are summarized as follows:

1. Improving professional and practical abilities:

(1)  Two course modules are established for students to develop and enrich English communication skills and diversified and practical professional knowledge based on their interests and career development, in order to enhance their competitiveness in workplaces in the future.

(2)  The Department strives for funds actively to expand or maintain software and hardware equipment for its teaching and research, providing teachers with quality teaching and research equipment and providing students with a quality learning environment.

(3)  The Department has its curriculum combined with industrial practice and builds a stable and diversified cooperation relationship with the industry in order to enhance students’ practical and workplace skills.

2. Focusing on career development and work attitude:

The Department not only focuses on learning results of students, but also cares about the development of its mental, life, learning and career counseling for students and their learning attitudes. Through the relevant counseling activities and care mechanisms initiated by NCUT, the College and the Department and relevant elective courses, the Department intends to strengthen students’ learning motive and enhance their learning efficiency, assisting students develop career strategies and paths and timely correct their learning mentality.


The Schooling

The Department of Applied English was founded in 2004 under College of Humanities and Creativity and the four-year technical program provided by Day Division was established at the same time. In 2009, the four-year program was provided by Division of Continuing and Extension Education.

In terms of educational key points, the Department not only have students learn relevant knowledge of English in a lecture, but also interests students in English and American literature, applied linguistics and English teaching, in hopes that through teaching of professional teachers in different fields and many research and learning channels, students can enhance their professional knowledge and daily life skills and have innovative learning patterns, to be fully prepared for advanced study and employment after graduation.

The teaching of the Department is divided into the two major teaching areas, “English Teaching” and “Business Management”, aiming to cultivate students to become the practical talents with the ability to communicate in English, the international language, and the professional ability for English teaching or business management.


Facilities

The Department covers B2, 1F, 5F and 6F of Guo Xiu Building, where teachers may conduct teaching, research, administrative and learning activities. The Department has a multifunction room (the conference room), 8 research rooms for teachers, 2 administrative offices, 1 department office of Student Association, 1 maker classroom, 4 professional classrooms (language classroom, interpretation and multimedia classroom, multimedia and Coffee Corner, and ESP video conferencing classroom) and a storage room. In addition, language classrooms A and C are jointly used by the Department and the Language Center.
